Mark Howard has been named chief legal officer at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. He will assume the role on April 11. He will oversee the company’s trial, compliance, government relations, corporate citizenship, and corporate governance functions. Mark Howard will replace Patricia Hatler, who plans to retire in April.

Nationwide Insurance today announced that it has named Mark Howard as its new Chief Legal Officer. Howard will be responsible for leading the company’s legal, government relations, compliance, corporate citizenship, and governance functions. He replaces Patricia Hatler. who announced his retirement last fall.
Mark Howard holds degrees from Duke University and Baylor University. He also holds a Juris Doctor and an MBA from Southern Methodist University. At Southern Methodist University, he served as managing editor of the Southwestern Law Journal. He is also a licensed attorney and certified public accountant. He also serves on several nonprofit boards, including the USA National Board of United Way Worldwide and the Operating Board of Buckeye Ranch.
Before his career in the insurance industry, Howard served as an attorney in Dallas and Washington, DC. Board Chairman of Clarity Child Guidance Center in San Antonio. He also serves on the advisory board of Baylor University’s Hankmer School of Business.

Before joining USAA, Howard was an attorney in Washington, D.C., and then served as an audit partner at Arthur Andersen in Dallas. He currently serves on the boards of the Clarity Child Guidance Center and the Hankmer School of Business at Baylor University. Held various board positions including the South Texas Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel.
He is a member of the United Way Worldwide
In addition to being a member of the United Way Worldwide Board of Directors, Mark Howard has held several executive positions. Most recently, he was executive vice president and chief financial officer of the United Way of Greater Atlanta. In this role, he oversaw accounting and financial operations and managed over $100 million in assets. Additionally, he led the organization’s Strategic Resource Development Committee and negotiated the employee benefit plan. Additionally, he managed the organization’s “60 Days of Success” campaign for donors for the first time.
As Executive Director of the Howard Center, Mark oversees the accounting, financial, and investment functions of the Howard Foundation. Previously, he served as executive vice president and CFO of United Way Worldwide, where he led financial operations for more than 1,800 United Ways in 41 countries. In addition, he managed a $40 million investment portfolio and a diversified income portfolio consisting of corporate and private grants.

For more than 30 years, Buckeye Ranch has been restoring hope and healing to children and families affected by the opioid crisis. During the past year, pastoral staff treated 3,792 children. Through personal care, they learned to deal with personal problems and gain control over their lives. They eventually become successful adults. Mark Howard is an active member of Buckeye Ranch Nationwide and is a frequent speaker and contributor to the organization’s public policy and advocacy efforts.
